Women’s Hormone Health

Burlington and Binbrook locations

We understand that women’s health needs differ from men’s, and offer specific treatments to enhance a woman’s quality of life throughout her reproductive cycle.

According to your particular concerns and symptoms, we begin with the appropriate laboratory hormone assessments , an easy-to-administer saliva test to accurately measure the level of hormones in your body. This includes the various forms of estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, DHEA and testosterone.

Once we have identified any specific imbalance(s) present, we will customize your treatment plan, using natural remedies which have been shown to be non-invasive and cause fewer side effects than conventional medical treatments.

We assess and treat many hormone-related conditions affecting a woman’s health and well-being:

Hypothyroidism (Low Thyroid)

Maintaining your thyroid health is an important part of overall wellness. Symptoms related to low thyroid or hypothyroidism can be subtle, and include:

  • Unexplained weight gain, without a change to diet or exercise (and even with a decrease in appetite)
  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Forgetfulness
  • Depression
  • Headaches (typically mild but continuous)
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling weak during a workout
  • Arthritis and muscle cramps
  • Feeling chilled when others are comfortable or warm
  • Constipation
  • Irregular periods

To assess for low thyroid function, we offer a urine hormone assessment which tests for 3 thyroid-related substances over a 24-hour period.

PCOS

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the leading reasons for infertility in women. Common symptoms, in addition to the inability to become pregnant, may include:

  • Irregular or no menstruation (amenorrhea)
  • No ovulation
  • Multiple cysts on the ovaries
  • Acne
  • Excessive facial hair
  • Obesity (although this is not the case for many women with PCOS)

Women with PCOS typically have lower levels of progesterone and higher levels of male hormones, particularly testosterone. They may also have increased levels of the hormone prolactin, and abnormal insulin regulation. PCOS can lead to serious health issues including endometrial cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, and diabetes, and significantly increases the likelihood of miscarriage and infant death during or shortly after birth.

There are several effective herbal approaches for treating PCOS.

Perimenopause and Menopause

As women age, estrogen and progesterone levels decline while androgen levels (testosterone and DHEA) can increase. Often, progesterone levels decline more sharply than estrogen, leading to what is called estrogen dominance. Particularly common during perimenopause (the years leading up to menopause), it can contribute to the following conditions, among others:

  • Breast pain and tenderness, lumps, fibrocystic breasts and breast cancer
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Unwanted hair growth
  • Weight gain
  • Thinning skin
  • Mood changes and depression
  • Bone loss

We work with you to optimize health and relieve symptoms during perimenopause, menopause, and post menopause.

PMS

Bloating and weight gain, mood swings, tender breasts and food cravings before a menstrual period have been accepted as a “normal” part of the monthly cycle but are in fact an indicator of hormone imbalance, often estrogen dominance (see above). If not dealt with, this may lead to more serious concerns at perimenopause and menopause.

Hormone imbalances may affect a man’s health, as they do a woman’s. Four hormones – testosterone, estradiol, cortisol and DHEA – are key in men’s health. Hormone imbalance may lead to:

  • Bone loss
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Memory loss
  • Mood problems and depression
  • Breast enlargement
  • Weight gain
  • Prostate enlargement (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH)

When indicated, we offer hormone assessments for men and work with your results to customize a treatment plan using natural therapies.

Clinical Nutrition

Burlington and Binbrook locations

Clinical nutrition is at the core of what we do at NEX Wellness, because optimal nutrition is the foundational element for optimal health.  A large proportion of health conditions can be linked to imbalanced nutrition and suboptimal digestive health.

Clinical nutrition encompasses the study of the relationship between food and a healthy body. It looks at the science of nutrients, and how those nutrients are digested, absorbed, transported, metabolized, stored and eliminated by the body.

As not everybody is the same, this requires a personalized approach. Quite different from working with a general dietitian or following standardized nutritional guidelines, the approach we take at NEX is to look at your individual symptom picture and then assess your current diet, the nutrient levels in your body, as well as the presence of any toxins, food sensitivities and allergies and/or hormonal imbalances that may be compromising your ability to optimally utilize nutrients. We then work with you through diet and lifestyle counselling, supplement recommendations and in some cases IV therapies, to support immune function, reduce inflammation, optimize digestion and restore wellness.

Weight Loss and Dietary Support

Burlington and Binbrook locations

Most diets fail because they rarely focus on individual needs and lifestyle. Our naturopathic approach incorporates expertise in clinical nutrition to provide diet and lifestyle counselling.   Instead of using fad diets that can be harmful to the body and make weight loss difficult to sustain, we will show you how to make optimal nutrition for healthy weight a natural part of your daily lifestyle. Our approach to weight loss management is individualized to understand and address the specific cause(s) of your weight gain.  These may include:  poor dietary habits, lack of physical activity, food intolerances and/hormonal imbalances.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)

NEX Wellness is pleased to offer BIA – Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis or Bioimpedance Analysis.  BIA is a method of assessing your body composition, the measurement of body fat in relation to lean body mass, and it is an integral part of your health and nutrition assessment.

Your BIA results will help guide us in creating a personalized weight loss or overall dietary plan, including nutritional supplements when appropriate, and exercise.  With follow-up tests, BIA also measures your progress throughout your weight management program and as you improve your health.
